Opportunities in business

Ryan Luckman is a vet and practice partner at the Veterinary Centre, Waimate. He visited Waimate while still at vet school and said it made an impression on him, right from the outset, as a great little town.

‘It’s friendly and welcoming, with heaps to do.’

He joined the golf, squash, and rugby clubs when he moved to Waimate. He also joined the Waimate Theatre Company, and started a pub band.

‘For a small community right in the middle of the South Island it’s really well connected - it’s a really good place to work, especially in a job like vet. For people starting out it’s a lot cheaper to live in than a lot of places, but the opportunities are greater.’

Ryan and his partner, Claire, who is also a vet and HR manager at Waimate vets, have two young children.

‘For a young family the town is really well set up - its childcare facilities are excellent, and you find out about all these other things going on, like ripper rugby - and meet even more people.’
