There is an excellent rock and moa display as well as a large selection of horse drawn vehicles. The court house is a interesting old building, although currently most of it is closed to the public while it undergoes repairs. In fact Waimate Rocks are appearing all over the place including Australia, Switzerland, Patea, Auckland Botanical Gardens, Kaikoura, Oamaru, Glendhu Bay, Christchurch, Northern Lakes (Queensland), California, Aromoana, Baldwin St Dunedin, Cheviot, Blenheim, Amberley and London! The London rock was found by a Waimate man at Heathrow Airport.....he thought it was a great sign and put it in his bag to bring home again! The Waimate Rocks group attend many community events to offer rock painting. It's a social activity for all ages, the youngest painter has been 3 months old.....the oldest probably closer to 100! The rock painting craze originated in the USA as The Kindness Project. It's set up for wall climbing, netball, basketball, tennis, squash, indoor bowls, table tennis, cricket, in-line skating, and badminton. It's a great idea for a birthday party. If you would like to have a go at rock painting Waimate Rocks hold painting sessions often, follow them on Facebook to stay informed. If you can't make a session just have a go at home, here's some advice from Sheryl Roberts from Waimate Rocks: "We find that the Resene Test pots are great value for money for painting rocks, especially with the 2 for 1 coupons from the supermarket dockets. Any acrylic paint can be used.....we have been gifted many left over house paints. We’re really fortunate to have these amazing tracks, and Glenda has plans for even more. She devotes a lot of her time and energy to Trackways. It’s not just about building and promoting the tracks. There’s also an increasing need for compliance, ie creating Memorandums of Understanding with Waimate District Council, land owners, Department of Conservation (DOC) and other stakeholders. In 1999 Glenda gathered a team of women to run conferences for women across the South Island. Her aim was to see women reach their potential in their homes and communities. She hosted these conferences for over ten years. Glenda also taught for ten years full time in a rural Waimate primary school. She then spent another ten years relieving in all our urban and rural primary schools. She’s well known, and much loved by all the children she’s inspired. For the past four years Glenda has also chaired the governance committee of the Waimate Historical Society. Glenda and her husband John have been running Christmas in the Square in Waimate for the past 12 years, the last five years with the help of a great team. As head girl of Waimate High School in 2018, Monique used her final speech to reach out to her peers and younger students. Monique didn't hold back as she spoke openly about her struggle with coming out as gay, and her battle with depression, when she addressed the crowd at the school's prize giving. She shared her experiences candidly, to help our children who may go through, or be going through, similar struggles. She said she decided to speak openly about her experiences as she wants people to know it is ok to be honest and open and to realise that no one is alone. "Everyone is struggling with their own things, and that's okay. You're allowed to be struggling, and you're allowed to need help". Working alongside Karalyn Reid from the Waimate District Council, they set up an area in the main reception of Council as a collection point for people to drop off wrapped presents. The Salvation Army collect and distribute the presents in time for Christmas. It’s been such a success they have surplus gifts to give out during the year gifts to give out during the year for children’s birthdays. “I was overwhelmed by the generosity from members of our community, and to hear from Council staff that parents were bringing in their own children to place gifts under the tree to bless other children.” Lyn is also the secretary of the Waimate Anglers Club. They hold an annual event at Hook Beach to inspire children to have fun and get into fishing. She’s also setting up a support group for people with Diabetes. Not only by providing medical services via Waimate Medical Centre, but also as the District’s on-call rural PRIME (Primary Response in Medical Emergencies) doctor. This means she is on call 24/7 in the event we may need her help. She can’t do anything without being mindful of where her pager is. Dr Creegan has had to leave a family Christmas Dinner, and her daughters 16th birthday, to rush to an emergency. It’s a comfort to know she’ll be there if we need her. It’s a service she provides for love, not money. Dr Creegan, is also involved in enhancing the area between McCulloch’s Bridge and the Black Hole, with riparian planting. The committee has the goal of bringing the "community feel back to Waimate" and restore a sense of positivity. As part of this Mandy was responsible for bringing the Christmas Parade back, after an absence of 30 years. The parade is Christmas magic! Hundreds of people line the streets to watch. It’s been a huge success and it definitely brings the community together in a positive way. Mandy gives her time and energy to lots of other important fundraisers during the year. An example was when she started to fundraise for insulin pumps for two local kids. Once her team started, and pushed for more information, they got the funding. After raising 5 of her own children she registered as a foster carer and has since become mum to another 28 children, including 7 currently living with her. As well as the foster work, Jo also runs Waimate Main School’s Breakfast Club five mornings a week, and ferries quite a few of their children to and from school in her van. She started catching, taming, desexing and rehoming cats and kittens in her own time, and at her own expense. Approximately a year ago Toni advertised for people interested in forming a rescue here in Waimate. They joined Street Cats South Canterbury, as the Waimate branch. Toni and her team are called out whenever someone notices a cat that needs spayed, and when cats and kittens need to be re-homed. Since June last year they’ve helped 143 cats and kittens. This church replaced the original, built in 1876. The rose window at the front of the church is 4.2 metres in diameter. The three bells in the tower were cast in Belgium; the largest weighs 15cwt (3/4 ton), the other two 10cwt (1/2 ton). The church was renovated in 1954. The fourteen "Stations of the Cross" paintings are originally from St Mary's Church at Makikihi. The building’s glittering past from 1906 as a shopping arcade, and later a picture theatre, is easy to imagine. It was built of Makikihi bricks fired at William Quinn’s brickworks, north of Waimate. The Arcadia incorporated an arcade of shops, a dozen on either side, giving passage through from High Street to Grigson Street. When the courthouse opened in 1879, the only offender that day was ‘an inebriate’ who was acquitted in honour of the occasion. The courthouse closed in 1979, and was converted to a museum by the Waimate Historical Society and Archives. It’s one of the district’s most stylish buildings and attracts hundreds of visitors each year. In 1854 Te Huruhuru met Michael Studholme and came to an agreement with him about the new settlers’ occupation of the land. This monument was laid in 1934 to commemorate the meeting place between Chief Te Huruhuru and Michael Studholme. It was officially opened by Joseph Thomas Te Huruhuru (grandson) and E.C. Studholme (son). Opened in 1973 by the Prime Minister Norman Kirk, who had a Salvation Army upbringing in Waimate. This is the third structure to have been built by the Salvation Army. The first, built in 1884, was destroyed by fire in 1900. It was replaced the following year by a brick building that still stands on Queen Street. Cruickshank was the second woman to complete a course at Otago Medical School, and the first to go into general practice. Christchurch sculptor Donald Paterson worked on the sculpture for nearly 12 months. In the mid 19th century Waimate was a small village surrounded by about 1200ha of native forest. By the 1870s hundreds of men were employed at five sawmills operating in the bush. In 1878 nor-west winds fanned a fire which burned for eight days. Matai and totara trees were hauled from the Waimate forest in 1872 to build the church. Designed by Benjamin Mountford, the church was built by J.W. Gaitt and G. Dickson for 350 pounds. The distinctive St Augustine's lantern tower was built by S. Collett, using local kahikatea, when the church was enlarged in 1889. Among the beautiful stained glass windows is one on the side of sanctuary based on the design of Sir Edward Burne-Jones, a leading artist. The church has two of New Zealand's few stained glass windows designed and manufactured by the English firm of Morris & Co. Dr Cruickshank died in the influenza epidemic of 1918, while working tirelessly to look after others afflicted with the illness. Cruickshank was the second woman to complete a course at Otago Medical School, and the first to go into general practice. Christchurch sculptor Donald Paterson worked on the sculpture for nearly 12 months. In the mid 19th century Waimate was a small village surrounded by about 1200ha of native forest. By the 1870s hundreds of men were employed at five sawmills operating in the bush. In 1878 nor-west winds fanned a fire which burned for eight days. The building’s glittering past from 1906 as a shopping arcade, and later a picture theatre, is easy to imagine. It was built of Makikihi bricks fired at William Quinn’s brickworks, north of Waimate. The Arcadia incorporated an arcade of shops, a dozen on either side, giving passage through from High Street to Grigson Street. When the courthouse opened in 1879, the only offender that day was ‘an inebriate’ who was acquitted in honour of the occasion. The courthouse closed in 1979, and was converted to a museum by the Waimate Historical Society and Archives. It’s one of the district’s most stylish buildings and attracts hundreds of visitors each year. In 1854 Te Huruhuru met Michael Studholme and came to an agreement with him about the new settlers’ occupation of the land. This monument was laid in 1934 to commemorate the meeting place between Chief Te Huruhuru and Michael Studholme. It was officially opened by Joseph Thomas Te Huruhuru (grandson) and E.C. Studholme (son). Opened in 1973 by the Prime Minister Norman Kirk, who had a Salvation Army upbringing in Waimate. This is the third structure to have been built by the Salvation Army. The first, built in 1884, was destroyed by fire in 1900. It was replaced the following year by a brick building that still stands on Queen Street. It was built for the commemoration of King Edward VII. It's in Seddon Square in Waimate, a great little park right in town. Matai and totara trees were hauled from the Waimate forest in 1872 to build the church. Designed by Benjamin Mountford, the church was built by J.W. Gaitt and G. Dickson for 350 pounds. The distinctive St Augustine's lantern tower was built by S. Collett, using local kahikatea, when the church was enlarged in 1889. Among the beautiful stained glass windows is one on the side of sanctuary based on the design of Sir Edward Burne-Jones, a leading artist. The church has two of New Zealand's few stained glass windows designed and manufactured by the English firm of Morris & Co. The memorial was unveiled on the 6th October 1904. Zealandia was the daughter of Britannia. This church replaced the original, built in 1876. The rose window at the front of the church is 4.2 metres in diameter. The three bells in the tower were cast in Belgium; the largest weighs 15cwt (3/4 ton), the other two 10cwt (1/2 ton). The church was renovated in 1954. The fourteen "Stations of the Cross" paintings are originally from St Mary's Church at Makikihi. Contains memorial windows (1929) to the district’s pioneers including the Manchester Brothers, John and George, who were the founders of the church. John Manchester was the first Mayor of Waimate. Two good mates - Barry Sadler, of Transport Waimate Ltd, which owns the silos, and Waimate artist Bill Scott collaborated on the project to decorate the silos with murals celebrating the town’s past. Māori here trace their lineage to Waitaha, Kāti Mamoe and Ngāi Tahu. To these people Waihao is their turangawaewae, their home. Kāti Mamoe migrated from the North Island in the sixteenth century and Ngāi Tahu arrived in the seventeenth century. The Waihao marae hosts visitors on Waitangi Day and at other times by arrangement. The base rock is greywacke, and it’s faulted along the steep eastern flank of the hills, generally tilting west. Like all of New Zealand, this land is still on the move. One of New Zealand’s historic gems, this vibrant museum is unique in that it’s located in the town’s former courthouse. It is home to thousands of items and images telling the stories of Waimate district - from a tiny watch to a traction engine. The collections include fossils and moa bones, medical equipment from the old Waimate Hospital, horse-drawn farm machinery, and a room full of clocks.
