From London to lake side

Introducing Waimate News and Views editor, and local business woman, Lorraine Shortus.

Lorraine has recently taken over the reigns at the News and Views, Waimate’s weekly news publication. It’s got a fresh new look and lots of new features.

News and Views is a community paper and Lorraine wants to tell your stories, “It’s a forum to share local news and events, interesting history and characters, pretty much anything local that people want to share”.

The paper is distributed widely to subscribers by post and email. It’s also available for purchase at several stores on the main street in Waimate. If you have anything you’d like to contribute get in touch via the contact details below.

Originally from London, Lorraine has lived in the Waimate District since 2003. She met her husband Jonathan while backpacking in Western Australia, where they lived for 8 years. They returned to NZ to start a family, their two daughters currently attend Waimate High School.

Lorraine’s latest venture (alongside raising two teenage girls and editing the News and Views) is Silver Star Creative - a soon to be launched interior design business. Her first project is the interior design of her new family home. You can follow her creative journey via Silver Star Creative’s Facebook page. Once that project is complete she will be taking on new clients, offering a range of interior design packages.

2019 is shaping up to be a big year, with some exciting new changes in the pipeline for the Waimate News and Views, a new house to build and a business to launch. Lorraine’s excited by all the development that’s happening around the District, including the amount of new businesses opening up and the movement in the property market. On the back of all that positivity launching Silver Star Creative seemed a logical thing to do.

Favourite thing about living in the Waimate District:

The proximity to the Waitaki Lakes, around an hour from door to caravan door! We camp there every summer, and basically spend every waking minute on the lake skiing and boating.

Favourite bite to eat:

Anyone that knows me knows I love good coffee, so I’ll have to say catching up with friends at Harvest Bar & Kitchen, having a coffee and admiring the view.
